B. Turbo Rebuild Kits
Before starting a rebuild of your Turbo, please see page 397. There are 3 ways to buy par ts for your Turbo rebuild: See also Shim above.
1 – INDIVIDUAL PARTS: See Section “A”, page 43
2 – “COMPLETE” REBUILD KITS: This is the cheapest way to get most of the parts for a major rebuild. See also C5A.
3 – POOR MAN’S REBUILD KIT: This rebuild kit is for a person to clean up his Turbo and just reseal lt. It will include all new seals except for the
aluminum seal (with carbon ring) which may be OK. (I prefer to use the full kit when I rebuild a Turbo for the first time). If your aluminum seal is NOT OK your Turbo
may still push oil and you will have to start over.
“Complete” Rebuild Kits – Also See C5A
NOTE: The Full Turbo Rebuild Kits Have Been Discontinued from GM. We have an excellent replacement. We supply a new style aluminum seal housing that is machined to take
the new replaceable type carbon seal (future rebuilds will be less expensive). Read your choices carefully. Also consider the outlet pipe gasket (#17, page 41).
C5: 1962–66 STOCK TURBO – Includes: Shaft sealing ring with plastic suppressor, turbine & exhaust housing gasket, bearing, snap
ring, 6 bearing shims, mating washer, 2 impeller shims, complete new style aluminum oil seal with replaceable carbon seal, Viton oil
seal “o-ring” & compression housing gasket. (Also see C5A) C5 1 lb.
C7809: Same as C5 kit – Less just the new style aluminum seal housing (does include replaceable carbon seal). This kit
should only be ordered if your turbo already has our new style aluminum housing. (Also see C5A) C7809 8 oz.
C1599: Same as C5 Kit LESS bearing and bearing shims (Also see C5A). C1599 8 oz.
Reseal Kit: For use only with turbo that has our new style aluminum seal housing. Does not include aluminum
housing. Includes : replaceable carbon seal, seal “piston” ring with plastic suppressor, intake & exhaust gaskets.
C2328 8 oz.
C5A: Buy along with above kits for all par ts suggested for a complete turbo rebuild. C5A includes: carb to turbo
gasket (C12), turbo base gasket (C245), 2 chrome Intake to head gaskets (C12A), special nut (C6AX), turbo to chrome
intake hose (C11), shaft spacer (C685), extra piston type seal with plastic suppressor (C6). Also consider #17, page 41.
C5A 10 oz. C5AOX (C5A less C685 & C6) 10 oz.

HOW EASY SHOULD IT SPIN?
There are usually (3) things that keep a Turbo from spinning. (1) carbon build up behind the turbine or (2) the large clamp not tight enough or exhaust housing so worn that
it can’t press hard enough against the heat shield to push it away from the turbine (see SHIM above) or (3) turbine bearing not shimmed correctly. Assuming all of these
are okay (and the housing is in place) the turbine will not spin like a pinwheel. In fact, if you spin it as hard as you can with your finger, it probably will not do more than
1–1½ revolutions. As long as it doesn’t seem to bind, it’s normal. But things can change when it is hot!
