IS YOUR CORVAIR READY FOR A/C? (Cont'd)
ENGINE
• Remove the lower shrouds – I'm not a big fan of removing the lower shrouds, but the summer time cooling gains are hard to
ignore. GM reported to have gained as much as 28 degrees improvement at high speed. Low to mid 20s may be more reasonable for normal
driving. Remember, if you do remove the lower shrouds, be sure and put them back on if you want the heater & defroster to work!
• Consider aluminum oil pan and valve covers – We offer finned aluminum oil pans and valve covers to help improve
cooling. The fins improve cooling by a small amount, but every little bit helps. See page 29.
CABIN
Now let's move to the interior-the part of your car that you spend the most time in. As with the engine, there are many things you can do to the interior to
improve your A/C performance as well.
• Adjust and seal your heater and air vents – If you have not recently inspected or replaced the seals on your heater
and air-vent doors (in the front kick panels), or you can't remember the last time you adjusted the heater cables, hot air is leaking into your
car throughout the summer months! This is the number one problem found when installing A/C systems. Our kit includes a recirculating
evaporator/blower system, and it is designed to take the air near your passenger's feet and "condition"it to be 30-35 degrees colder when it
comes out of the vents. It is crucial to your A/C's performance that you are not adding heat to it through a leaky vent! You can test your car by
getting it up to highway speed and feeling with your hand where the heat comes out. If you feel hot air, you'll need to get it fixed for maximum A/C
performance.
• Tint your windows – A nice feature of the Corvair is the expansive "greenhouse" of glass and excellent 360-degree view we get from
the driver's seat. Unfortunately, this is also counter-productive to keeping it cool inside! Tinting your windows really goes a long way in improving
your A/C system. Check your state regulations first, but the darker tint the better.
• Make sure your doors and window are sealed – Convertible owners may have more trouble here than the hardtop
owners, but both stand to lose a substantial amount of cold air through old, hard, poorly-sealed weather stripping around the doors and windows.
You are working hard to cool the air in your car, so keeping it in the car is worth the effort.
ELECTRICAL
GM improved the electrical system in A/C optioned cars. With more modern solutions available to us today, there is little excuse to have a sub-standard
electrical system for Corvairs with air.
• Upgrade to a modern internally-regulated alternator – This is one of the most common upgrades made to
Corvairs, and with good cause. The A/C system will add considerable load to your electrical system, and a modern, high-output alternator is
needed to keep up. You can find specific information on this important upgrade in almost every Corvair related book on mechanical subjects.
We strongly recommend it for use with our A/C kits. See page 84A.
• Add a relay to your A/C switch – A common problem with the Corvair A/C is the fragile switch that is used each time the
air is turned on. If you have a good one, protect it with this 30 amp relay. Straight forward wiring and small size make this an easy upgrade. It
is cheap insurance considering you cannot buy the switches new! All of our systems have this relay preinstalled so that you do not need any
additional relays. See page 320 (C11808).
Common Mistakes
● Do not try mounting condensers in the fender well area, this does not provide adequate air flow for the condenser.
● If you are in a high temperature climate and will be using the air conditioning year round, we highly suggest the trunk mounted condenser kits to help
reduce the load on the motor.
● Be sure to use new hoses when updating your system to R-134 refrigerant. We have all of the hose sizes in stock at great prices.
● You do not have to pay high prices to have your system installed, our instructions are complete and if you are mechanically inclined at all you should
be able to do the install in a weekend with ease.
● Do not remove the caps from your drier unit until you are at the shop that is going to charge your system.
● Do then take your car to a professional air conditioning shop to have the system evacuated and charged.
We have tried to address most of the issues that you may run into when installing A/C into your car, but as always, if you have questions, please feel free
to call and check with our tech people who have been specifically and personally trained in the air conditioning kits by Rusty Rose himself. Rusty did
most all of the developmental work on all of these kits. Also be sure to check out the book we have listed on air conditioning systems, there is a lot of
good information in this book that is helpful when working on your existing system or installing a new one (page 319). We consider the work that Rusty
did in developing these kits to be of superior quality compared to anything else that we have seen. The fit, ease of installation and aesthetically pleasing
results are proof of the hard work that Rusty put into developing these kits. There may be less expensive and more generic systems available and if we
get enough feedback from customers wanting more generic underdash systems, we may look into offering these as well for slightly less money.
