Coil Springs
WHY REPLACE?
Old coil springs get weak and cause sagging, bottoming out and extra wear on tires and suspension. Springs must always be
replaced in pairs. We see many 1964 with broken rear springs (bottom coil).
RIDE HEIGHT
Heights listed in the shop manual are only approximates. We have often found heights varied as much as 1" when different
"identical" springs were installed. Generally, replacement stock springs will give you the highest ground clearance ± 1" from
that listed in Shop Manual. In most original GM photos you see, the front end appears slightly high (or rear end slightly low).
We feel that GM did this so a person could put 50-150 lbs. in the trunk, load in 5 people and not have the front end be
drastically low! All of our springs listed below are designed to equal the originals, so your front will appear slightly high, but
will match factory measurements. Shocks do NOT affect ride height. GIVE ALL SPRINGS 50 MILES TO FULLY SEAT!
HEAVY DUTY SPRINGS: 1965-69 HD tend to lower the car about ½–¾" more than stock springs, have a slightly higher weight capacity and
improve handling (partly by lowering the center of gravity). 1960-64 HD springs do not usually lower car (we normally do not suggest HD springs on early
cars – please see page 141). We suggest New Gas Shocks or Koni Shocks with HD springs.
REPRODUCED SPRINGS: All our springs are quality repros. See page 141 for GM# cross over. Our manufacturer has tried to match all of
the springs as closely as possible to new original GM springs we supplied them.
